When the door opened a couple of hours later, he turned with a grim smile. “It's done.”

“Excellent.” Foster clasped Rider's shoulder. “You've proven yourself today. This is only the beginning.”

“I'm ready,” Rider said. “Just point me in the right direction.”

Foster nodded. “You'll get your next assignment soon enough.”

Rider left the back room, scanning the bar for any sign of Quinn. His heart raced when he finally spotted her leading a man toward the private rooms in back.

Their eyes met from across the room, and for a moment, the rest of the world fell away. Something flickered in her gaze—regret, he wasn't sure.

Then she looked away, refocusing on her target, and the spell was broken. Still, Rider couldn't stop thinking about her as he walked into the night. About the secrets behind those dark, fathomless eyes and what mysteries lay beneath the surface. What was she up to? At least now, he knew why she’d disappeared and where she’d been hiding out. He was sure her sister had either not gotten the message from Grace or had chosen to disregard it.

Rider waited in the shadows outside the bar, watching and waiting. Finally, Quinn emerged from the back entrance. She walked with purpose, shoulders back and head high, but he noticed the slight hitch in her step and the way she grimaced when she thought no one was looking.

His hands curled into fists at the thought of anyone hurting her. He shook off the irrational surge of protectiveness—she was quite capable of protecting herself, for God's sake. Still, regardless of how skilled she was, he couldn't ignore the urge to keep her from harm.

When she ducked into the alley beside the bar, Rider followed. “Quinn, wait.”

She whirled around, eyes narrowing. “What are you doing? We decided to play it cool…keep our past and our relationship hidden. Are you trying to blow my cover?” They’d discussed it the previous night after having sex. Not rousing any additional suspicion by showing their cards. How would they explain knowing each other with their fake identities?

“No. I can’t do it. Remain distant from you in the same room.” He stepped closer and lowered his voice. “Let them think we fell in love, or at least lust. It wouldn’t be too far-fetched for you to find a man, right?”

“I’ve been working here for three years and never fallen in love. For all I know, they might think I’m a lesbian.”

Her hand slipped beneath her jacket, likely reaching for her weapon. “Do you think they’ve never noticed your gun?”

“They’ve noticed it and asked me about it. I told them I like to protect myself when I’m heading in and out of work. Foster laughed and told me to keep it. He liked my gusto.”

She pulled her hand from her jacket. “What did you figure out? How did you deal with the problem?”

“I didn’t kill him.” He offered a grim smile. "I’m sure you knew that already.”

A ghost of a smile touched her lips. “So what?”

He hesitated, rubbing the back of his neck.
